Zagreb to Budapest
On our last partial day in Zagreb we woke up late and went to get some coffee at the same little street cafe. I have started ordered macchiatos which are basically just small cappuccinos and have been really enjoying them. We checked out of rooms and left our bags in the hostel before heading out for our last day in Zagreb. We walked through the old town some more. There is a really long tunnel under the old town that was built as a bunker in WWII and is now used as a shortcut/concert venue. Zagreb is interesting as it is a tone of different times shoved into one condensed area. We got some lunch and went to the broken relationships museum which discusses peoples breakups with their romantic partners, family members or whatever else. It was a bit sad at times but definitely quite interesting. After the museum I started stressing about the train tickets because it was unclear if our train was going direct to Budapest or if we needed to transfer in a small town make it there. It was so unclear what was happening that a Croatian man we met on board said he didn’t understand. We boarded our train and the sign said it was going all the way to Budapest so that was a bit more comforting. We talked to the Croatian man for a while on the train before he moved compartments so that kids could sleep. The train ride was very long and took nearly 7 hours. The train stopped at every station for what felt like an eternity every time. When we got in to the station it was a quick 1km walk to the hotel. When we showed up we weren’t sure if the hotel was right as the entrance was right next to a kebab restaurant. We got shower to our room where we found out the bathroom reeked of sewage. It was so bad that we tracked down the lady who showed us our room and told her how bad it smelled. She was nice enough to give us the only other room they had. We were so sick of crap by that time in the day. I think the lady saw the look on our faces when we came banging on her door like debt collectors and she was pretty quick to change the situation. Anyways long day that ended in a room that didn’t smell like sewage so that’s a win.
