Plitvice to Zagreb
In the morning we got up late and decided to go on a cave tour. We stopped for some iced coffee and made our way. The caves are part of the karst rock formation of the area and there are hundreds around Plitvice. Apparently 1 cm of growth the stalactites takes roughly 100 years. Inside the cave they had found bones from prehistoric wooly rhinos, cave lions, and cave bears. After the cave tour we went to the prehistoric museum that taught us about the history and how they explored the caves. The museum was a bit strange as the guides were not very knowledgeable and they were really just trying to show everything that Croatians had found or discovered. It was giving signs of academic brain drain which made both of us a bit sad that we couldn’t ask many questions. Afterwards we started driving for Zagreb. About an hour into our drive we ran into a crash in the middle of the road. It didn’t seem like it was moving so we turned around, unfortunately it meant that I had to drive down a tiny one way road for 6 kilometres. It was really the grand finale to my driving experience in Croatia. We dropped off the car and took an uber to the hostel. We stopped for a slice of pizza and did a 3 hour walking tour of the city with a funny older lady. She was quite eccentric and would constantly stop walking to tell us stories. She went on a couple funny rants about he people in the city including one about the guy that lights all the street torches in the old town at night. She didn’t like that he was wearing camo cargo pants so she went on a long rant about how unprofessional and unfriendly he looked. After the tour we went to get some desert with some of the people from the tour then had Greek food for dinner. The Greek salad was fantastic. All in all we spent about 5 hours on guided tours that day and by the end of it I was tired of listening to people speak.
