Driving the Coast: Two Days
Tuesday we are up early as we had to pick up the rental car at the split airport which was about a 30 minute drive away. Getting the car was pretty easy. We got an orange Dacia Duster that is 6-Speed Manual. It is my first time driving 6 speed and I honestly don’t even understand why the first gear exists. I can start out of second easily and when I start out of first I can’t make it to 5Km/h without pushing 3500 rpm. I guess it’s supposed to give power when your stuck in the mud ad it is an all wheel drive. Anyways adjusting to that was fun as starting and getting up to speed was a bit slow going through all the gears. We made it out of split and stopped in Trogir for some breakfast. We climbed the old watch tower which had a beautiful view of the town. We got back in the car and drove until we got to Primošten where we stopped at a viewpoint. We stopped one more time and paradise beach outside of Zaboric. I had a nice swim and got to jump of some rocks. We made it to our hostel in Tisno in the late afternoon. It was a very large house with a few rooms. It was very clean a d close to the town. We walked down to the small town and had some ice cream and dinner. I had some fresh calamari and Abi had the schnitzel and we split some bruschetta with really nice fresh tomatoes. There were lots of Germans and Austrians in the little town. It seems that the more remote we get the more German speakers we find. After dinner I went for a quick night swim before retreating to the hosts for the night. The people couple that was staying our room with us were Croatians that we’re driving from Split to Zadar and they didn’t want to do the whole drive in one day. Split to Zadar is a 2 and a half hour drive and these people had to take a pit stop for the night. It’s not even like they arrived late. As a Canadian I feel like stopping half way on a 2.5 hour drive at a hostel for the night is criminal.
The next morning we went for a cappuccino in town. I had burek with meat for breakfast. We drove about 2 hours through the windy coastal mountains. We stopped at 2 nice beaches around Baric Draga for an hour each. When we got to the little town our rental was in we were greeted by a single lane road with a cliff face on one side. We were very happy to get into the apartment as it is the first time on the trip that I have not stayed in a hostel. We drove down to the town to get some groceries and made some pasta for dinner. We had a nice quiet nice having some beer on the patio overlooking the sea.
What a great trip you are having. We went as far as Rijeka in Istria but it's a lot like Italy. Good luck driving that car on all the hills!!!
